How to apply 3D metallics epoxy floor coating

With a few easy-to-follow instructions, anyone can apply our Epoxy Metallics product!

Any surface that is about to be sealed needs to be completely cured, clean and free of all contaminants, and fully profiled and etched. Moisture should also be limited as all Dura-Kote Metallics systems utilize non-vapor-permeable sealers or moisture and vapor barrier DK 700

Make sure that temperatures will remain between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity below 75% and there will be no precipitation in the applied areas for a 12 hour period following application.

A black or very dark primer coat should be applied using either Pigmented 100 solids Epoxy or Pigmented WB Epoxy.

Once primer coat has dried and cured (approximately 8-10 hours), the application of the metallic coat is ready.

Screen primer coat with 100 grit sanding screen, then vacuum up debris and wipe with a micro-fiber wipe with denatured alcohol.

Dura-Kote Epoxy Metallics is applied using the product Dura-Kote Epoxy 100.

Once you have a bucket of freshly catalyzed 100% epoxy, mix in 16 oz of Dura-Kote Metallic pearlized pigments per 3 gallon kit of catalyzed epoxy product.

Pour out contents completely in a fairly long trail for application.

Use spiked shoes when spreading product evenly over application area. Use your spreading tools to create your designs.

Once metallic coat has dried and cured sufficiently, a finish coat may be applied. We suggest the use of a Polyurethane or Polyaspartic.

16-30 hours after second coat is applied, the surface is ready for light use, and is fully cured after 5-14 days depending on environmental conditions.

MATERIALS

To create a metallic 3-D floor you should use the following materials:

1. Primer coat or (base coat)

Base coat - (available in water based recommended for smooth surface and solvent based – self leveling primer to covers imperfections)

Water based Primer - GE-C10W-BLK. Black Water Based Pigmented Epoxy

Coverage: 1st coat approximately 125 - 175 ft² per gal. For smooth surface or second coat approximately 200 -250 ft² per gal.)

Solvent Based Primer - GE-C100- 100% Solids Pigmented Epoxy

Coverage: As color coat: approximately 100 – ft² per gal. (9.3  m² ) 10.7 – 16 mils

For thick build: 40 – 70 ft² per gal. (3.7 – 6.5 m² per 3.8 L) 23—40 mils

2. 100% solids clear epoxy with Metallic Powder

Mix Epoxy Metallic 1—pint (.47 liter) to 100% Solids Clear Epoxy Floor Coating GE-100

3—Gallon (11.4 liter) epoxy kit

Coverage: approximately 65 ft² per gal. (6 m² ) 10.7 – 16 mils. For thick build: 40 – 70 ft² per gal. (3.7 – 6.5m² per 3.8 liter) 23—40 mils

3. Final coat - Clear Protective Top coat

For superior abrasion and chemical resistance, the Metallic Coat should be protected by a Finish Coat. There are several choices that have varying advantages:

GU-20 Polyurethane Solvent Based (gloss or satin)

GU-20W Polyurethane Water Based (gloss or satin)

GP 20 - Polyaspartic – (high gloss) quick dry

COVERAGE - Approx 350-600 sqft per gallon, per coat (varies widely based on substrate porosity and application methods)

Optional: SureGrip (Non slip sealer additive HD)

Application tools:

9" Roller Frame : or for 18" roller frame

Rollers: Wooster ¼" Epoxy Glide RollersWooster 1/4" Mohair Rollers or 3/8" nap rollers.

As an alternative to rollers, squeegee can be used for epoxy application.
